As mentioned already at the Business Pundit, Forbes is having their second “Boost your Business” competition looking to award $100,000 to an individual with the best business plan. Don’t take this competition light heartedly though, because it’s pretty serious, evident by last year’s very deserving/qualified winner.

To enter the contest, you need to type up your business plan in a clear, convincing 500 words (that’s not fluff). That’s due May 31. Then if you make it to the next round, you’ll need to film a 30 second elevator pitch of your idea.

From the feeling of this competition, it seems for suited for those with established businesses that could grow wildly with just a little bump of capital. Having said that, I also think that big business would love to finance some deserving, driving, college student startup if they do have a viable enough plan and credentials.

It’s definitely a long shot that I don’t think I’ll try out, but it’s something you should consider if you have an offline business idea with high potential. I say offline because online business doesn’t seem like it has as viable of an upside by just pouring $100,000 into the business coffers. The growth opportunities with offline businesses seem much larger than growth opportunities of online businesses with the same $100k. However, I’d love somebody to prove me wrong.

Perhaps this blog’s owner, Ryan, who may or may not have taken in $60,000 worth of funding a while ago, could elaborate as to whether 100k could grow an online business at a competitive rate. Uhm.. but anyways, this will definitely be an interesting competition to follow.

One of the greatest help that social network sites can provide to those who wish to earn money online is more exposure for their profiles, which include their websites and blogs. But social network sites are mushrooming like crazy nowadays that it can be just so confusing on which one to pour all your efforts on. Although I’m not saying that you should put all your eggs in one basket, it’s important to know which will be the most useful in helping you find employers or profitable projects.

I’ve landed about two jobs through my Facebook contacts. Now that doesn’t mean that you will also find that much or less clients/projects through this application-laden site, it has a great potential.

Like WordPress themes, MySpace layouts are one of the most searchable site skins and anything highly searchable deserves attention from those who’d like to make money online using a website serving ads.

It won’t be dubbed as the world’s largest professional network for nothing. One way that I notice to be of good use to get people to notice you and hire you is use the question and answer feature. Ask a question related to your job and you just might find potential clients inquiring about your services any time soon.

I’m not talking about advertising or affiliate marketing or selling your junk on eBay. Those are so last millennium! I’m talking about the new new economy.

1. Offer your professional expertise in an online marketplace.

These days, you can do more than just sell your old books via Amazon and your old Coach handbags via eBay—now you can sell your professional capabilities in a marketplace. No longer are you limited to looking for a permanent or contract job on Web 1.0 style job sites like Monster or CareerBuilder. The new breed of freelancing and project-oriented sites let companies needing help describe their projects. Then freelancers and small businesses offer bids or ideas or proposals from which those buyers can choose.

Elance covers everything from programming and writing to consulting and design, while RentACoder focuses on software, natch. If you’re a graphic designer, check out options like Design Outpost or LogoWorks–you don’t have to find the customers, they’ll come to you. Wannabe industry analysts might sign up for TechDirt’s Insight Community, a marketplace for ideas about technology marketing.

2. Sell photos on stock photography sites.

If people regularly oooo and aaaaah over your Flickr pics, maybe you’re destined for photographic greatness or maybe just for a few extra dollars. It’s easier than ever to get your photos out in front of the public, which of course means a tremendous amount of competition, but also means it might be an convenient way for you to build up a secondary income stream. Just because the software is free doesn’t mean you can’t make money on it–just ask Red Hat, a well-known distributor of Linux that sports a market cap of more than four billion dollars. As a solo web worker, you might not want to jump in and compete with big companies offering Linux support, but how about offering support for web content management systems like WordPress or Drupal? After getting comfortable with your own installation, you can pretty easily jump into helping other people set them up and configure them.

6. Online life coaching.

Who has time to go meet a personal coach at an office? And don’t the new generation of web workers need to be met by their coaches in the same way that they work: via email, IM, and VoIP? You could, of course, go through some life coaching certification program, but on the web, reputation is more important than credentials. I bet Tony Robbins isn’t certified as a life coach–and no one can argue with his success. 7. Virtually assist other web workers.

Freelancers and small businesses desperately need help running their businesses, but they’re not about to hire a secretary to come sit in the family room and answer phone calls. As a virtual assistant, you might do anything from making travel reservations to handling expense reimbursements to paying bills to arranging for a dog sitter. And you do it all from your own home office, interacting with your clients online and by phone. You can make $20 and up an hour doing this sort of work, depending on your expertise.

If you blog for any length of time on a particular topic–parenting, mobile phones, or PCs, for example–you will likely be approached to do book or product reviews. You can get free stuff this way, but are you selling your soul? Is there any such thing as a free laptop? These are decisions you’ll have to make for yourself, because no one agrees upon what ethical rules apply to bloggers. Even less do people agree on services like PayPerPost that pay you to write reviews on your blog. Check out disclosure rules closely and see whether such a gig would meet your own personal standards or not.

10. Become a virtual gold farmer.

A half million Chinese now earn income by acquiring and selling World of Warcraft gold to gamers in other countries. If you’re not a young person living in China, this probably isn’t a viable option for you. But what’s intriguing about it is the opportunity to make real money working in a virtual economy. Hope you’re all having a good day. Anyway, I know that this post is somewhat late. But, I thought I’d share this here anyway. In case you wish to keep it in mind for next year’s celebrations.

Yes, love it or hate it, Valentine’s Day is probably one of the most money-generating holidays. So, it’s always worth keeping it in mind when you’re running a business online. Especially if you’re in retail.

Here are some thoughts and ideas that you might want to consider for next year’s Valentine’s Day business season. It never hurts to plan early!

1. Advance Planning. Begin your holiday inventory/planning way in advance. Look at trends. Stock up popular items.

2. New Twist. Think of a new twist to the most popular gift items (flowers, chocolates, greeting cards, stuff toys, balloons, etc). Can you mix and match? Can you design flowers with current popular themes? Can you incorporate non-traditional traditional gifts with traditional/popular ones?

3. Social Media. Use social media to market and to promote your products discreetly. For example, free Valentine video cards that include an ad for your business may be made available via viral video sites like YouTube.

4. Previous Customers. Contact previous customers (if you were given permission to do so), and highlight your new inventory, if you haven’t done so yet.

5. Valentine themes. Make sure your website/online store look visually appealing and incorporating Valentine themes. And, if possible, even Valentine content (e.g., “How to buy a Valentine Gift for Your Man/Woman/Mom/Dad/etc” articles or reviews of your products, etc.).

Right after finishing my read on Darren’s latest post about recent PayPerPost developments, I decided to check out this website ‘s service again. It’s been a long time since I last visited this site, and back then, I couldn’t even sign-up to test out the program.
